Google AdSense Progress Tracking
It is important for all program participants to periodically test
changes they made to the programs, and to track the effect those changes have
on the bottom line.
Google itself makes it easy to track results using its
free tracking feature called channels. These channels can be used
to track ads on a specified URL, as well as to categorize ads based
on formats, location, web page, keywords, etc.
There are two separate channels offered by Google for tracking
purposes - URL channels and custom channels.
URL channels help web site owners to keep track of the performance
of their web pages. This is done without any alteration to the
advertising code itself. All the web site owner need do is enter
a full or partial URL into the channel and wait for the results.
Using a full page URL will track the performance of that page,
while entering a top level domain name will track all of the pages
on that domain.
Custom channels can be used to track the performance of the web
site based upon user specified criteria. A number of different
factors can be tracked, including format, color, font, location,
etc. Custom channels are very flexible and setting them up is
generally very easy and intuitive.
Up to 50 custom channels can be created, and these custom channels can
be used to compare the performance of different types of ads and how
different pages are doing. These custom channels also provide web
site owners with the ability to see where the clicks are coming
from. When using a number of different custom channels, it is
usually a good idea to name each channel in order to make it easily
identifiable.
Server logs can be used in conjunction with the channels offered by
Google, and those server logs can be a good way to keep track of
various AdSense ads throughout your web pages. In addition, web
site owners are free to use various external tracking packages to
keep track of AdSense clicks and statistics. These software
packages are designed to run locally on your own computer, and they
can provide access to some types of information that Google does
not keep track of.
It is important, of course to shop around and to make sure you get
the best program for your money. The best tracking software will
be able to keep track of such things as the URL of the referring
web sites, the type of browser those visitors are using, where
those who clicked the ads are coming from and the keywords they
used to find your web site.
It is easy to see just how powerful this type of tracking software
can be, and why it is so important for every web site owner to
carefully track these types of statistics. Fortunately the same
technology that has made programs like Google AdSense possible has
also made it easier than ever to track the results of the program.
Statistics that would have once been too cumbersome or too time
consuming to track can now be easily tracked and updated in real
time.
This makes it very easy for webmasters to test even the
smallest changes, like altering the size or color of a font, and
easily see the results of those small changes in clickthrough rates
and ad revenue.
